Reverse osmosis (RO) is a highly effective water filtration process that produces ultra-pure drinking water by forcing it through a semi-permeable membrane under high pressure, removing up to 99% of contaminants like salts, heavy metals, fluoride, bacteria, and chemicals. The system typically starts with a sediment filter to trap dirt, rust, and particles, followed by a carbon pre-filter that eliminates chlorine, odors, and organic compounds to protect the delicate RO membrane. Water is then pushed against the membrane, which has pores so tiny (0.0001 microns) that only pure water molecules pass through, while impurities are flushed away as wastewater or brine. A final post-carbon filter polishes the water for optimal taste before storage in a tank, making RO ideal for households seeking contaminant-free water, though it does produce some waste and may remove beneficial minerals.
